How Will WVU Replace Amir Jenkins' Minutes in College Basketball Crown?

The season isn't quite over for the West Virginia Mountaineers, but it is for true freshman guard Amir Jenkins who will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in both of his shoulders, according to WVU head coach Ross Hodge.

The timeline to recovery is unknown at this time, but we do know that the Mountaineers will have to fill his minutes as the backup to Jasper Floyd at point guard.

As expected, Honor Huff will be the guy mostly running the offense when Floyd is on the bench, per the head man.

“Without him (Jenkins) playing, obviously that means Honor probably has to play a little more point guard, and Morris (Ugusuk) will get more minutes than probably what he had at the end of the year.”

Huff did run the point at times this year and did so fairly well. Having him on the ball actually freed some things up because he wasn't having to work so hard just to get the ball in his hands. I actually thought the offense operated better with him in that role and was surprised that Hodge didn't play that way more often.

He will certainly be at the top of Stanford's scouting report, and they'll try to get the ball out of his hands as much as possible, but when he is at the point, it will allow WVU to get into its offense faster because they'll be playing at a quicker tempo.

What about Ugusuk?

Morris won't be playing the point, but because Huff will have to slide to the one, he'll get more opportunities at the two. He showed some promising things early in the season during non-conference play, but was never able to find his touch on the offensive end. In 22 games this year, he's shooting a measly 27% from the floor and 21% from downtown. Last year at South Carolina, he was a 40% shooter from three-point land on 3.5 attempts per game.

Once Jackson Fields and Chance Moore began playing, Ugusuk was knocked out of the rotation. In Big 12 play, he only appeared in 50% of the games and never played more than 11 minutes. As a matter of fact, those 11 minutes vs. Arizona were the only time he crossed double digits in minutes.

Don't be surprised if Hodge even asks Treysen Eaglestaff to run the point at times, too, especially if Huff were to get in foul trouble.
