Creighton Head Coach Greg McDermott: 'West Virginia Got a Good One'

Some respect being shown from one of the top coaches in college basketball.

New West Virginia men's basketball head coach Darian DeVries is receiving a lot of praise around the country and even got a shoutout from his former boss.

Creighton head coach Greg McDermott shared his thoughts in a tweet after seeing the news broken by Pete Thamel of ESPN.

"West Virginia got a good one!! Drock is the absolute best. I’m incredibly happy for him and his family!"

DeVries served on McDermott's staff from 2010-18 before taking the head coaching job at Drake. In their eight seasons coaching together at Drake, the Bulldogs had a record of 187-94 (.665) with four appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

The new head Mountaineer is known for his ability to develop talent and even played a big hand in Greg McDermott's son, Doug. "(Darian DeVries) was instrumental in Doug’s development and Doug would tell you that today," McDermott told the Des Moines Iowa Register in 2021. "They put in a lot of time together."
