Mountaineers in the 2024 NBA Playoffs

Several Mountaineers chasing that ring this postseason.

For the second consecutive year, the West Virginia Mountaineers will be well represented in the NBA playoffs. Players, coaches, and executives with WVU ties will begin their quest for a ring this week.

Here’s a look at the WVU basketball alums in this year’s NBA playoffs.

Jevon Carter, Chicago Bullls

Carter appeared in 72 games this season for his hometown Bulls and averaged five points, 1.3 assists, and 1.4 rebounds per game in a limited role. Although he’s a veteran, you can expect his minutes to be cut significantly in the postseason as Chicago shortens its bench.

First round opponent: No. 10 Atlanta Hawks (Play-In Tournament).

Miles McBride, New York Knicks

McBride has really upped his game over the past two months, shooting the ball at a 40% clip from deep while averaging 12.6 points per game. Head coach Tom Thibodeau has been impressed with Deuce’s recent play and should leave him in the rotation for the postseason.

First round opponent: TBD - 76ers/Heat winner.

Joe Mazzulla, Boston Celtics

For the second year in a row, Mazzulla has led the Celtics to the best record in the East and this year, the best record in all of basketball (64-18). The Celtics are heavy favorites to reach the NBA Finals and for some, the expectation is that they win it all.

First round opponent: TBD - Bulls/Hawks/76ers/Heat.

Mike Gansey, Cleveland Cavaliers

In his second full season as the Cavs GM, Gansey put together a roster that finished with a record of 48-34, nabbing the four seed in the East. After a rocky start to the year, Cleveland had a stretch from January to February where they went 17-1 to put them 19 games over .500. They struggled down the strech and lost one of the league’s worst teams, Charlotte, twice in the final month of the regular season. They’ll be hungry to get back on track and make a statement in the first round.

First round opponent: No. 5 Orlando Magic.

Jerry West, Los Angeles Clippers

The GOAT is looking to add another ring to his already impressive Hall of Fame career. West has served as as an executive board member and consultant for the Clippers since 2017 and played a big role in landing stars Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. This feels like the first time since that duo was assembled that the Clippers actually have a chance to make a run. Having James Harden helps too.

First round opponent: No. 5 Dallas Mavericks.

Jonnie West, Golden State Warriors

West serves as the Warriors Director of Pro Personnel. This year, it took Golden State a while to get going and at the halfway point they were three games under .500. They rebounded by going 27-14 over their last 41, including winning 10 of their last 12 games. Once again, Golden State is getting hot at the right time.

First round opponent: No. 9 Sacramento Kings (Play-In Tournament).
