Clark Pitches Complete Game Shutout as Mountaineers Clinch Series in Lawrence

Lawrence, KS – West Virginia starting pitcher Derek Clark threw a complete game shutout, registering seven strikeouts, for his third win of the season while Brodie Kresser went 4-4 at the plate with an RBI as the Mountaineers (18-12, 7-4) clinched the series over the Kansas Jayhawks (15-13, 7-7) with a 4-0 decision Saturday afternoon.

West Virginia grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Junior Brodie Kresser drove a one-out double, later moving to third, and freshman Aaron Jamison reached on a walk before the two utilized a double steal to score the game’s first run. Then, freshman Spencer Barnett lined an RBI single to right field.

The Mountaineers added a run in the fourth when Kresser and Jamison bunted for singles before junior JJ Wetherhold drove a single into centerfield, scoring Kresser for his third RBI of the series.

West Virginia extended its lead in the eighth after Reed Chumley worked a leadoff walk, senior Kyle West protected the plate with an infield single and with one out, Brodie Kresser went opposite field with a line drive RBI single to right field for a 4-0 WVU lead.

Derek Clark allowed just three hits on the day and only walked two Kansas hitters. Out of the seven Jayhawks left on base, two were in scoring position and it took till the ninth inning for Kansas to reach third as Clark and the Mountaineers take game two and the series 4-0.

West Virginia will look to sweep Kansas in the series finale on Sunday. The first pitch is set for 12:30 p.m. EST and the action will stream live on ESPN+.
