WVU CB Jacolby Spells Ruled Out for Remainder of Spring Practice

A big hit to West Virginia's secondary for spring ball.

West Virginia cornerback Jacolby Spells was beginning to turn a corner this offseason, but will now miss the remainder of spring ball.

According to head coach Neal Brown, Spells is dealing with an upper body injury and recently had surgery to repair the undisclosed injury.

“He’ll probably miss some time during fall camp, but he’s going to miss the rest of spring. He had a great winter, so hurt for him and for us because he really had a great spring. It won’t be anything that I think that’s (serious). I think he’ll be back at some point early in the fall.”

Spells was forced into action as a freshman in 2022 due to injuries in the secondary and made a name for himself with his pick-six against Virginia Tech. This past season, Spells saw limited action on defense, recording eight tackles in 12 games, primarily serving as a depth option.

Assuming all goes well with Spells’ recovery and he returns in enough time to get an opportunity, he’ll be in position to battle for a starting job. Others in the mix to start opposite of Northwestern transfer Garnett Hollis Jr. include Montre Miller, Ayden Garnes, TJ Crandall, and Jordan Jackson.
