Soccer confederation CONCACAF thinks Allianz Field is in Minneapolis
Yes we're the "Twin Cities" - but Minneapolis and St. Paul aren't identical. It's not like mixing up toddler-age Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, a totally forgivable mistake.
Yet it keeps happening.
The latest gaffe comes from CONCACAF. What is CONCACAF you ask? It's a FIFA-affiliated soccer body (long name the "Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football").
On Wednesday, CONCACAF announced the U.S. Men's soccer team will be playing Guyana at Allianz Field June 18 to open the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Trinidad & Tobago will take on Panama that day as well.
But Twitter user @andlovg (h/t to Jeff Rueter) spotted an issue with the announcement:
Hey non-Minnesotans: St. Paul =//= Minneapolis. You should have learned from Spirit Airlines' flub earlier this week.
It's particularly galling for St. Paul, considering Minneapolis rejected the chance to build Allianz Field in the north downtown area, with Minnesota United ultimately finding a home in St. Paul, where they were welcomed with open arms.
Somebody at CONCACAF must have noticed the error, as it is correct on the organization's website at least.
Nonetheless it's the second time this week that St. Paul has been confused for its younger brother.
This past weekend saw Spirit Airlines post an advertisement attracting travelers to "Minneapolis" but posting a picture of the St. Paul skyline.
The $200 million Allianz Field is preparing to welcome more than 20,000 Loons fans for the home opener this Saturday, who will be traveling to ST. PAUL to watch Minnesota United take on NYC FC.
