College Football Power Rankings: Georgia, Michigan lead CFBHQ Top 10

As we move into the month of November, the 2023 college football season is fast approaching gut-check time for the nation's top contending teams. Division and conference races are heating up, and the CFP selection committee is ready to announce its first top 25 rankings of the season. Where do things stand in Week 10?

  • Georgia remains the team to beat, but it's far from the consensus No. 1
  • Big Ten rivals are neck-and-neck right behind the Bulldogs
  • Pac-12 powers could be heading for title game rematch
  • Sooners, Longhorns both at one loss as Big 12 title approaches

In theory, team(s) in our power rankings should beat the team(s) ranked lower and lose to the team(s) ranked higher on a neutral field.

10. Ole Miss

Record: 7-1 (4-1 SEC)

Remaining schedule: vs. Texas A&M, at Georgia, vs. UL Monroe, at Mississippi State

Where things are now: For the second-straight season, the Rebels have one loss coming into November. Now they're hoping a repeat of last season isn't in store, when they lost 5 out of the last 6. The win over LSU but they also have the loss to Alabama. Ole Miss' defense has quietly been playing some quality football over the last few weeks, but the next two weeks will be critical.

9. Oklahoma

Record: 7-1 (4-1 Big 12)

Remaining schedule: at Oklahoma State, vs. West Virginia, at BYU, vs. TCU

Where things are now: The win over Texas shows this team can play its best when it counts for the most, but the loss to unranked Kansas is concerning. Granted, the Jayhawks are talented, but the Sooners failed to do the little things in the game, as penalties piled up and they couldn't generate enough defensive stops. But OU still has the skill players to test most teams.

8. Alabama

Record: 7-1 (5-0 SEC)

Remaining schedule: vs. LSU, at Kentucky, vs. Chattanooga, at Auburn

Where things are now: What the Crimson Tide lack in proper scrimmage protection, they make up for with some dynamic quarterback play, a cadre of gifted receivers who can create plays deep, and a defense that has tightened things up nicely in the last few weeks and ranks 16th nationally in scoring.

7. Texas

Record: 7-1 (4-1 Big 12)

Remaining schedule: vs. Kansas State, at TCU, at Iowa State, vs. Texas Tech

Where things are now: The Longhorns' offense looked to be in competent hands after making the change at quarterback to Maalik Murphy in place of the injured Quinn Ewers. After beating BYU convincingly and after OU's loss, Texas is back in the thick of the playoff chase, but there's no margin for error going forward, especially not with an offense ranked 120th in red zone efficiency.

6. Oregon

Record: 7-1 (4-1 Pac-12)

Remaining schedule: vs. Cal, vs. USC, at Arizona State, vs. Oregon State

Where things are now: Ranking top 10 in scoring, passing, and rushing, and 11th nationally in scoring defense, the Ducks are fresh off a statement win at Utah, ending the Utes' 18-game home win streak with another balanced performance. Bo Nix is unstoppable right now, leading college football with a 78.3 percent completion mark and has a 20-to-1 touchdown-interception ratio.

5. Washington

Record: 8-0 (5-0 Pac-12)

Remaining schedule: at USC, vs. Utah, at Oregon State, vs. Washington State

Where things are now: Still ranking No. 1 in passing production and No. 8 in total offense, the Huskies have played closer games since conference play opened up, including a sloppy win over Arizona State and a surprisingly close outing against Stanford. But they still have the tools to get into Pac-12 title contention and maybe further.

4. Florida State

Record: 8-0 (6-0 ACC)

Remaining schedule: at Pittsburgh, vs. Miami, vs. North Alabama, at Florida

Where things are now: The Seminoles have scored at least 30 points in the last 14 straight games, second only to the school's own record of 17 in ACC history and while the offense rightly gets a lot of attention, averaging 41.5 points per game this season, FSU's defense is playing strong, as well, holding its last two opponents to 14 combined pass completions.

3. Ohio State

Record: 8-0 (5-0 Big Ten)

Remaining schedule: at Rutgers, vs. Michigan State, vs. Minnesota, at Michigan

Where things are now: This isn't quite the explosive offense we've come to expect from the Buckeyes, but even so the presence of Marvin Harrison, Jr. means they can score anytime, from anywhere. But it's been the defense that has shown up this season, ranking 2nd nationally by allowing 10 points per game. It's tempting to jump OSU over Michigan here, thanks to a pair of top 10 wins, but the Wolverines get precedence for the time being.

2. Michigan

Record: 8-0 (5-0 Big Ten)

Remaining schedule: First in scoring defense, 7th in scoring offense, and scoring 40-plus points in each of the last four games, Michigan has passed every test so far as expected. Say what you will about the schedule, but the Wolverines rank 1st nationally with a 34.8 point scoring margin per game on average. That's what you expect against this competition and this team is playing with a lot of confidence.

1. Georgia

Record: 8-0 (5-0 SEC)

Remaining schedule: vs. Missouri, vs. Ole Miss, at Tennessee, at Georgia Tech

Where things are now: As expected, the defending champs are perfect up to now, even with the complaints about the defense not being as good as the last two years (How could it be?) and questions around slow starts on offense. The injury-induced absence of star tight end Brock Bowers is also a concern. And now comes the toughest part of the Bulldogs' schedule, against three ranked SEC opponents.
