The 2027 college football recruiting cycle is in full swing in early April of the 2026 offseason.

A sizable chunk of prospects in the class of 2027 have gotten their college commitments out of the way. The others are still cutting down their lists of options to choose from and scheduling visits to the schools that interest them.

One of the top uncommitted prospects in the class of 2027 is four-star wide receiver Eric McFarland III. The 5-foot-8, 176-pounder from IMG Academy ranks as the No. 4 wide receiver, No. 3 player in Florida and No. 22 overall player in the class of 2027 per Rivals. He reclassified from the class of 2028 into the class of 2027.

In two seasons of high school football, McFarland III has caught 65 passes for 1,169 yards and 19 touchdowns and thrown an 80-yard touchdown pass. He was the Offensive MVP of the 2026 Polynesian Bowl, posting four receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown to go with 35 yards on the ground.

In addition to football, McFarland III participates in the 100 and 200-meter dashes as a part of IMG Academy's track and field team.

247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins called McFarland III an "electric offensive weapon that constantly puts defenders in conflict as he quickly transitions from receiver to runner with his speed and agility" in a scouting report from December of 2025. Ivins' comparison for McFarland III was former Georgia wide receiver Zachariah Branch.

Josh Newberg and Chad Simmons of Rivals broke down the latest on McFarland III's recruitment in a recent edition of "The Inside Scoop." Simmons mentioned that Texas A&M was the leader to land McFarland III's commitment and that he was on a visit as they were recording.

"Everything starts in his recruitment with the Texas A&M Aggies," Simmons said. "Wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins is doing a great job there (with) his résumé of developing playmakers. He kind of sees that comparison with Mario Craver last year with Eric McFarland. So, (Texas) A&M, they want to be successful all over the country, (there's) no better place to start than IMG Academy, full of blue-chippers every cycle."

As Simmons and Newberg alluded to, the Aggies already hold one commitment from IMG Academy in five-star defensive end Zyron Forstall in their 2027 recruiting class, which currently features 11 commitments. Three-star Hakim Frampton is Texas A&M's only current wide receiver commitment in the class of 2027.

Other contenders for Eric McFarland III's commitment

Simmons mentioned that he expects Miami to receive a visit from McFarland III in the next few weeks. The Hurricanes' top returning wide receiver is a smaller, speedier one who moved up a class in his recruitment, in Malachi Toney, similar to what McFarland III is doing.

Ohio State is another program viewed as a contender to land McFarland III; he has an official visit scheduled to Ohio State for the second weekend of June. The Buckeyes already hold a commitment from four-star wide receiver Jamier Brown in their 2027 recruiting class.

Proximity to Las Vegas, McFarland III's hometown, is something that is keeping USC in the mix for his commitment. If the Trojans landed McFarland III, he would become the third four-star wide receiver commit in their 2027 class. He has an official visit scheduled to USC for the weekend before his visit to Ohio State.
