Baltimore Orioles Accomplish Multiple Historic Feats with Win on Wednesday

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Washington Nationals 5-1 on Wednesday night to move to 40 games over .500 on the season. In the win, the O's accomplished multiple pieces of team history.

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Washington Nationals 5-1 on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Orioles are now 40 games over .500 at 99-59.

The win also brought about multiple instances of team history for Baltimore, which currently has the best record in the American League.

Per ESPN Stats & Info:

The @Orioles are 40 games over .500 (99-59) for the first time since the final day of the 1979 regular season.

That season they finished 102-57 and reached the World Series.

What a turnaround it's been for Baltimore, who was the laughing stock of the league for a few years recently. If they can wrap up the American League East crown, they'll have the best record in the AL and will earn the No. 1 seed in the looming playoffs.

The Orioles also made some history with their dominance of the Nationals this season.

The @Orioles held the Nationals to just 1 run over their 4 meetings this season (0.25 per game).

That's the fewest runs per game allowed in a season series against an opponent in MLB history.

What's interesting about this is that the biggest question about the Orioles all season was their pitching staff, but certainly not against Washington.

Rookie Grayson Rodriguez threw 5.2 innings in the win on Wednesday. He allowed one run and struck out five. Three relievers combined to shut down the Nats the rest of the way.

The O's will go for win No. 100 on the season when they host the Boston Red Sox in the final series opener of the year on Thursday night.

First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. ET.
