Verdugo hit a leadoff homer on Thursday afternoon against JP France of the Astros, then followed it up with one off of Dodgers pitcher Lance Lynn on Friday night before connecting off Julio Urias on Saturday.
Perhaps Verdugo is inspired by all the Mookie Betts talk in Boston this weekend? After all, Betts is returning to Boston for the first time since being traded for Verdugo (and others) following the 2019 season and has been showered with praise.
It's been a nice power stretch for Verdugo, who now has 12 home runs this year and 51 RBI. He's hitting .283 and has posted an OPS of .802.
The 27-year-old will be heading into the final year of his rookie contract in 2024, so if he can exhibit more power, the better it will help him when it comes to his future earning potential.
The Red Sox entered play on Saturday at 68-61 overall and 3.5 games back of the third and final wild card spot in the American League. They are seeking to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2021 season, when they went to the ALCS.
The Dodgers entered at 79-48, which is the second-best record in the National League. The two teams are tied 2-2 at the time of this posting and will finish out the series on Sunday afternoon.
