The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are known as the best rivalry in baseball, with both teams routinely battling it out late in the season for playoff positioning. They are also known for their playoff battles in 2003, 2004 and their meeting in the 2021 wild card round.

However, this year, the rivalry is headed for some history in a negative way.

Per James Smyth of the YES Network on social media:

This will almost certainly be the only the 3rd season with the Yankees & Red Sox finishing last and second-to-last (1925 & 1966). Yankees have finished in last place only 4 times (1908, 1912, 1966, 1990).

It's amazing that with both of these franchises in existence for more than 100 years, this has only happened three times previously and it's also amazing just how far sideways it's gone this year.

The Yankees have been beset by injuries, losing Aaron Judge, Josh Donaldson, Giancarlo Stanton, Tommy Kahnle, Luis Severino and Carlos Rodon for large swaths of the year.

The Red Sox, on the other hand, have struggled to maintain consistency, but they also have dealt with injuries to their starting rotation. Garrett Whitlock, Tanner Houck, Chris Sale, James Paxton, Corey Kluber and Brayan Bello have all missed time.

The two teams enter play on Wednesday with identical 73-72 records. The Yankees just swept a doubleheader from the Red Sox on Tuesday to pull even.

The two teams will play again on Wednesday night with the first pitch coming at 7:10 p.m. ET.
