The Chicago Cubs continued their dominance over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, finishing off a fantastic series with their division rivals with a 5-3 victory. The Cubs took three-of-four in all from the Reds.

After the series, the Reds have fallen out of first place in the National League Central. They are 0.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs are in third place at 2.5 games back. They are also just 2.0 games back of the wild card in the NL.

The series put each of these teams on the opposite ends of their own franchise history. Per ESPN Stats & Info:

The Cubs scored 46 runs this series against the Reds, tied for their most in a 4-game series since 1900 (1961 vs Reds).

The Reds allowed 46 runs this series, tied for their most in a 4-game series since 1900 (1961 vs Cubs).

The Cubs put up five runs on Monday, then put up 20 on Tuesday, 16 on Wednesday and then five on Thursday to reach the 46-run mark.

The historic performance coincides with the Cubs decision to become buyers at the trade deadline. It also coincides with the Reds lack of action at the trade deadline. The Reds needed another pitcher and this series continues to further exemplify that.

The Cubs will start a huge series on Friday with the Atlanta Braves. First pitch is set for 2:20 p.m. ET. Atlanta is the best team in baseball.

The Reds will look to get back on track against the Washington Nationals. First pitch is 6:40 p.m. ET.
