Chicago Cubs' Middle Infield Tandem Does Something Not Seen in Seven Years with Gold Glove Wins

Chicago Cubs infielders Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson became the first middle infield tandem to win Gold Glove Awards since a pair of San Francisco Giants in 2016.

Chicago Cubs infielders Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson made some baseball history on Sunday, becoming the first set of middle infield teammates to win Gold Glove Awards since 2016.

That's when Joe Panik and Brandon Crawford of the San Franscisco Giants did it.

Per the Cubs:

Golden boys.

Congratulations to @nico_hoerner and @LieutenantDans7 on winning the @RawlingsSports Gold Glove Awards for 2B and SS. They're the first pair of teammate middle infielders to win since 2016!

Hoerner took home the award at second base while Swanson won at shortstop.

For Hoerner, this year continued his coming out party. Building off what he established in 2022, he played in 150 games, including 135 at second base. He made just seven errors and posted a .988 fielding percentage.

Offensively, he also grew as well, hitting nine home runs and driving in 68 runs. He stole 43 bases under the new rules and hit .283 with a .346 on-base percentage.

For Swanson, the award capped off his first year in Chicago. After spending seven years with the Braves, he signed on the North Side before the 2022 season. He played in 147 games, making just 11 errors. He posted a .981 fielding percentage.

At the plate, he hit just .244 but did pound 22 homers and brought in 80 runs. He also stole nine bases.

The Cubs finished in second place in the National League Central and still have questions to answer this offseason, especially if Marcus Stroman and Cody Bellinger leave in free agency.
