Colorado Rockies Cause New York Yankees to Do Something the Franchise Has Never Done Before

The Colorado Rockies came back on Sunday to stun the New York Yankees, making the Yankees do something they've never done before in franchise history.

The Colorado Rockies beat the New York Yankees on Sunday, 8-7, to take the series two games to one.

The Rockies won in extra innings in a wild back-and-forth thriller. They scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, then surrendered two runs in the ninth to force the tie. They gave up two more in the 11th before getting three of their own to win.

The Yankees loss - and the way they lost - was historic.

Per ESPN Stats & Info:

Yankees today:

Led 3-1 in 8th inning

Led 7-5 in 11th inning

They lost the game 8-7.

This is the 1st loss in Yankees history where they had multiple leads of 2+ runs in the 8th inning or later.

Nolan Jones hit a two-run home run the 11th to tie the game while Alan Trejo hit his first home run of the season for the win.

Reliever Ron Marinacio suffered the loss. He's now 4-5 for the Yankees with a 3.83 ERA.

The series victory was a nice moment for the Rockies, who are mired in a dreadful season. They are now 36-58 and in last place in the National League West. They also own the worst record in the National League.

As for the Yankees, it's a critical loss as they battle for the playoffs in a crowded American League field. They are now 50-44 and 2.0 games back in the wild card race.

The Yankees will play the Angels on Monday at 9:38 p.m. ET while the Rockies will play Tuesday against the Astros.
