The Houston Astros beat the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night by a score of 7-3. The result was critical on both sides as the Astros maintained a 0.5 game lead on the Seattle Mariners for the second wild card spot in the American League.

For the Red Sox? They fell to 5.0 games back of Seattle for the final wild card spot, as their playoff odds continue to tumble.

Future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander dominated on the mound for the World Champions, going 6.0 innings while surrendering no runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out nine in moving to 9-6 on the season. He now owns a 3.19 ERA.

Verlander accomplished some impressive baseball history in the win, registering his 3,300th career strikeout and moving up this impressive all-time list.

Per @StatsCentre:

Putting forth a superb scoreless 6 inning start with 9 strikeouts on Tuesday night against the Red Sox, @astros veteran pitcher Justin Verlander picked up his 338th career quality start but his 330th in the American League. As a result, he now ranks tied behind only 6 names here

He ranks behind only Roger Clemens (404), Bert Blyleven (362), Early Wynn (360), Frank Tanana (348), Walter Johnson (337) and Jim Palmer (337).

One of the best pitchers of his generation, Verlander is a nine-time All-Star, a three-time Cy Young winner and a two-time World Champion.

The Astros will take on the Red Sox again on Wednesday night.

First pitch from Houston is 8:10 p.m. ET.
