The Miami Marlins needed a win on Friday night to help aid their National League playoff odds, but instead they received a historic loss.

Getting beat 16-1 dropped the Marlins to 79-75 on the year. They are now 1.0 game back of the third and final wild card spot in the NL and are seeking their playoff spot since the COVID 2020 season.

Per @OptaSTATS on social media:

The Marlins are the first NL team to allow 16+ runs in a game in which their starter did not allow a run since the Cardinals did so on September 18, 1915 against the Braves (20).

Now, this stat should come with a caveat because it's certainly more possible to have this happen now in the era of "Openers." While J.T. Chargois did start for the Marlins, he only pitched 0.2 innings before being removed. Five separate relievers were responsible for the 16 runs allowed.

On the other side, former National League Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes went 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits. He struck out six and is now 10-8 on the year.

The Marlins will look to re-group on Saturday when they host the Brewers again. First pitch from loanDepot park is set for 4:10 p.m. ET as Brandon Woodruff (MIL) goes up against Jesus Luzardo (MIA).

Woodruff, the veteran righty, has battled injury most of the year but is 5-1 with a 1.89 ERA when he is available. Luzardo, a hard-throwing lefty, is 10-9 with a 3.68 ERA.
