The New York Yankees lost to the Kansas City Royals 12-5 on Friday night.

While the loss itself is disappointing, it's rather immaterial as the Yankees aren't going to the playoffs.

What's most disappointing is the way in which it happened.

Carlos Rodon, the Yankees' big offseason acquisition from last year, surrendered eight earned runs in the first inning - without getting an out.

Per @StatsCentre on social media:

Most ER by a pitcher without getting an out in a game - MLB modern era (1900-present):

9- Hank Borowy (8/18/1951)

8- Carlos Rodon (Friday night in the 1st inning of his #Yankees 12-5 loss to the Royals)

8- Bob Kammeyer (9/18/79)

8- Blake Stein (8/31/98)

8- Paul Wilson (5/6/2005)

It's been a disastrous first year in Pinstripes for Rodon, who was one of the big prizes on the offseason market a year ago. He signed a six-year deal with the Yankees but was hurt for a large portion of the year with back and arm troubles.

He finishes out the year at 3-8 with a woeful 6.85 ERA. An elite strikeout artist during his season with the Giants in 2022, he fanned 64 batters in those 64.1 innings.

If he can rebound to his prior form, he'll form a nice 1-2 at the top of the Yankees rotation in 2024 with Gerrit Cole, but as Friday evidenced, he's a long way from that right now.

The Yankees will play the Royals again on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
