New York Yankees' Rookie Anthony Volpe Stands Alongside Alfonso Soriano in Team Record Books

The New York Yankees beat the Miami Marlins on Friday night as rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe moved into rare company in team history.

The New York Yankees beat the Miami Marlins 9-4 on Friday night to pick up a game in the American League wild card race.

By virtue of a Toronto Blue Jays loss, the Yankees are now 60-56 and 4.0 games back of the third and final wild card spot. They are still behind both Seattle and Boston.

Aaron Judge went 1-for-3 with a home run while rookie Anthony Volpe also connected on a blast, giving him 15 on the season.

That 15th homer put him in a rare club in team history, per ESPN Stats & Info:

Anthony Volpe joins Alfonso Soriano in 2001 as the only rookies in Yankees history with 15+ HR and 20+ SB in a season.

Soriano hit 18 HR and had 43 SB in 2001.

The 22-year-old Volpe is hitting .212 this season with the 15 homers and 44 RBI. He's got exactly 20 steals at this point. Despite his struggles average-wise, he has found ways to contribute to this team and should be a fixture in the lineup for years to come.

Being compared to Soriano is also a good thing for any player. He was a seven-time All-Star and a four-time Silver Slugger who hit 412 career home runs across 16 seasons with the Yankees, Rangers, Nationals, and Cubs.

The Yankees will play the Marlins again on Saturday afternoon at 4:10 p.m. ET.

The Yankees haven't named a starting pitcher as of this posting but the Marlins will counter with former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara.
