Rafael Devers Homers His Way into Multiple Record Books on Sunday

With a home run on Sunday against the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox star Rafael Devers entered the history books in multiple ways.

With a home run in the first inning on Sunday against the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox star Rafael Devers made multiple instances of history.

Both of these stats come from Red Sox reporter Gabrielle Starr on social media.

First, Devers joined a rare group of Red Sox players who have had multiple 29-home run seasons before turning 27 years old.

Red Sox players with at least one 29+ HR season before turning 27:

Rafael Devers (3)

Xander Bogaerts

Mookie Betts (3)

Nomar Garciaparra (2)

Mo Vaughn

Jim Rice (3)

Butch Hobson

Reggie Smith

Rico Petrocelli

Ken Harrelson

Tony Conigliaro (2)

Ted Williams (3)

Babe Ruth

So, Devers is one of only six players to have multiple of those seasons before the age of 27.

He also continues his historic domination of the Yankees, joining a more exclusive group in baseball history.

MLB players with 23+ HR against the Yankees before turning 27:

Jimmie Foxx (39)

Rocky Colavito (26)

Alex Rodriguez (25)

Rafael Devers (23)

Devers' home run came in the first inning off Clarke Schmidt. He's now hitting .271 this season with the 29 home runs and 85 RBI. He's posted an OPS of .870.

One of the best young hitters in the game, Devers won't turn 27 until late October. He signed a 10-year contract extension this past winter which will keep him in Boston for the majority of his career.

The Red Sox entered play on Sunday at 65-58 and 3.0 games back of the third and final wild card spot in the American League.
