The San Diego Padres lost to the San Francisco Giants on Monday night 2-1 in a game that was a critical blow to the Padres' fleeting playoff hopes.

San Diego has made a charge in the month of September but the loss dropped them to 77-80 and 5.5 games back in the third and final wild card race.

Despite the loss, Padres' ace left-hander Blake Snell made a continued effort for the National League Cy Young award. He went 6.0 innings, taking a no decision despite allowing no runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out seven, lowering his season ERA to 2.25.

His efforts also contributed to make baseball history. Per ESPN Stats & Info on social media:

Blake Snell has a 1.20 ERA during his streak of 23 straight starts allowing 3 ER or fewer.

The only pitcher in the last 100 years to have a lower ERA in a 23-start span within a single season (excluding relief app) was Bob Gibson at 0.85 during his 1968 Cy Young-winning season.Sne

Snell has struck out 234 batters in 180.0 innings this year and has delivered a 1.19 WHIP.

He's 14-9 this year and will be looking for his second career Cy Young award. He also won the American League version while with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018.

The Padres will take on the Giants again on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 9:45 p.m. ET as Seth Lugo (SD) pitches against Kyle Harrison (SF).

Lugo is 7-7 with a 3.79 ERA while Harrison is 1-1 with a 4.85.
