Ohtani was the catalyst for the Angels. In addition to his hit and home run, he walked twice. He only threw four innings on the mound after experiencing cramping in his hand and fingers, so that will be a situation to monitor.
Ohtani has dealt with body cramping and a blister in the last month, so this is the latest thing to watch for the Angels, who are seeking their first trip to the playoffs since 2014.
The Angels led 3-1 in the ninth inning but lost the lead on a grand slam from Mariners rookie Cade Marlowe.
The loss dropped the Angels to 56-54 on the season. They've lost three straight and are now 7.5 games in the American League West. As for the wild card chase, they are 4.0 games back of the final spot.
The Angels and Mariners play again on Friday night. Luis Castillo (SEA) pitches against lefty Reid Detmers (LAA).
Castillo is 7-7 with a 2.88 ERA while Detmers is 2-8 with a 4.35 ERA.
