In this story:

When Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Mike Soroka returns to the mound on Monday night against the Oakland Athletics, it will be one of the feel-good stories of the 2023 season thus far.

Soroka will be making his first appearance on a big league mound since 2020. He has missed nearly the last three years with injuries. He tore his Achilles tendon in 2020, then tore it again through rehab.

It's been more than 1,000 days since he last appeared on a big league mound and the Braves social media team made sure to get the hype machine rolling for his return.

You can watch the epic video below and the caption reads:

Against the odds. Against all obstacles. He never stopped working to get back where he belongs.

In addition to being a feel-good story for Soroka, this move is also significant for Atlanta.

1) The Braves need some help in the starting rotation. With Max Fried and Kyle Wright out with significant injuries, the team has turned to the minors for starters, and recently held a bullpen game. That's not sustainable.

2) Soroka is a guy who has had success in the big leagues before. He went 13-4 and made the National League All-Star team in 2019, at the age of 21. He finished second in Rookie of the Year voting and sixth in Cy Young voting that year.

He's made 37 career big league starts, going 15-6 with a 2.86 ERA.

The Braves and A's will play at 8:07 p.m. ET.
