Chicago Cubs Star Dansby Swanson Aiming For Return This Weekend

Having been on the shelf since before the All-Star break, Chicago Cubs star Dansby Swanson is aiming to return from injury this weekend.

Chicago Cubs star Dansby Swanson is aiming for a possible return this weekend, per reports.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Cubs manager David Ross said Wednesday that he's optimistic Swanson (heel) will be able to return this weekend, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

ANALYSIS
Swanson began taking batting practice Monday and has increased his level of baseball activity in the days since with no apparent issues. The shortstop has been on the shelf since July 8 because of a bruised left heel.

The 29-year-old former No. 1 overall draft pick is in his first year in Chicago after spending the previous seven years in Atlanta.

He's hitting .258 this season with 10 homers, 36 RBI and four steals.

He's a two-time All-Star and a Gold Glove winner who helped the Braves win the 2021 World Series.

Lifetime, he's a .255 hitter with 112 home runs.

The Cubs are currently 44-50 and 7.5 games back in the National League Central. They are further back (8.0) in the National League wild card picture.

They will be in action again on Wednesday night against the Washington Nationals. First pitch is slated for 8:05 p.m. ET as Kyle Hendricks pitches for the Northsiders.

This weekend, when Swanson is hopefully back, they'll have a divisional series with the St. Louis Cardinals.

He signed a seven year, $177 million deal this offseason, one of several big deals given to shortstops this winter. Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Correa and Trea Turner all signed long-term deals in various places.
