Detroit Tigers pitcher and former No. 1 pick in the draft Casey Mize took a big step forward in his return from Tommy John surgery on Wednesday.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Mize (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

ANALYSIS
Wednesday marks Mize's first bullpen session since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June. He only threw fastballs and still has a long way to go before making his return, though it remains possible that he'll be able to pitch before the end of the year.

There are still many steps to go, but it's good to see Mize on the mound again at all.

Picked first overall out of Auburn in the 2018 draft, Mize made his debut in 2020. He's 7-13 in his young career with a 4.29 ERA but showed real promise in 2021 when he pitched to a 3.71 ERA in 30 starts.

He got hurt at the beginning of 2022. He's part of a young core of Tigers pitchers that hasn't been able to stay healthy including Matt Manning and Tarik Skubal.

If the Tigers can get their pitching healthy eventually, they have a nice core of young players that also features Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson.

Detroit is currently 34-44 and in third place in the American League Central. They trail the Guardians and Twins by 4.0 games at the time of this posting.

They'll take on the Texas Rangers on Wednesday in Arlington. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.
