After being reported earlier on Friday as "likely," the Houston Astros have officially placed slugger Yordan Alvarez on the injured list.

The following comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Alvarez was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with right oblique discomfort.

ANALYSIS
While the Astros are simply calling it discomfort for now, Alvarez is headed back to Houston to be further evaluated to see if he's dealing with a strain. Generally, oblique injuries result in longer than minimum stays on the IL, but more will be known once Alvarez gets checked out by the doctor.

That's certainly worrisome news, as the report is right. Oblique injuries often become weeks-long issues. We'll hope that's not the case here, but it certainly could be.

It is a brutal loss for the defending champions as Alvarez is one of the most feared hitters in all of baseball. As Jose Altuve has battled injury and Jose Abreu has underperformed in Houston, he's kept the lineup afloat.

He's hitting .272 right now with 17 homers and 55 RBI. He's also posted a .963 OPS. His 55 RBI are the best in all of baseball while he's tied for fourth in home runs.

It would also be a devastating loss because the Astros are trying to track down the Texas Rangers in the American League West. The Astros are 36-27 and 5.0 gams behind Texas in the American League West.

Alvarez is a lifetime .293 hitter with 115 homers and 338 RBI. He made his major league debut in 2019 and previously played in the Dodgers organization.
