Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper could be back in his team's lineup as early as Tuesday, NBC Sports' Corey Seidman reports.

Harper underwent Tommy John surgery last November, just weeks after his club fell to the Houston Astros in the World Series. The Phillies had expected Harper to make his 2023 debut around the All-Star break. Now, the slugger could be taking the field more than two months earlier than the club had expected.

"It'll be tomorrow and then we'll see what happens," manager Rob Thomson said Sunday. "I don't think, just talking with Harp, I don't think he'll play tomorrow even if he's cleared. But hopefully, he gets cleared."

Harper has been prepping to play first base, a position he hasn't played before at the Major League level. When he makes his return, he will be the club's designated hitter, forcing Kyle Schwarber to play left field regularly. At some point though, Harper could play first base, creating more flexibility for the club. With Harper in the DH spot, both Schwarber and Castellanos will man corner outfield spots. Neither player is known for their defense, but the Phillies will happily trade defense for offense if it means having the 2021 National League MVP back in their lineup.

After a slow start, the Phillies are beginning to heat up. Philadelphia has won seven of its last eight games and is currently on a four-game win streak. They will finish off a three-game series with the Houston Astros Sunday night at Minute Maid Park, going for a sweep of the defending champions.
