Former Milwaukee Brewers Top Prospect Goes on Shelf and May Not Get a Chance to Get Back to Majors This Year

Former Milwaukee Brewers top prospect Keston Hiura has been raking at Triple-A this season, but an injury may mean he won't get back to the big leagues in 2023.

The quest to get back to the majors this year may have been derailed by an injury for Milwaukee Brewers minor-leauger Keston Hiura.

Per Brewers reporter Adam McCalvy:

A number of you have asked about Keston Hiura’s absence from the Nashville lineup. He had been playing through right elbow discomfort and it got to the point that Hiura and the Brewers decided it was time for more tests.

TBD on when he will return to action.

Hiura was a former Top-10 prospect who hasn't panned out at the major league level, as proved by the team removing him from the 40-man roster.

The 27-year-old has played in parts of four seasons with the Brewers, seeing diminishing results. He hit 19 home runs in just 84 games in 2019 before leading the majors in strikeouts in 2020. He hit just .168 in 61 games in 2021 and hit .226 in 2022, but he's working to earn another chance.

This year at Triple-A, he hit .311 with a .397 on-base percentage. He blasted 23 homers and drove in 79.

Still young, there's a chance for him to contribute to the Brewers down the line. He's under contract through 2025, but does need to solve his contact woes. He struck out 91 times in 88 minor league games this season.

At the major league level, the Brewers are currently in first place in the National League Central. They'll be in action again on Saturday night against the New York Yankees.

First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. ET.
