Former Toronto Blue Jays' Top Prospect Gets DFA'd Again, Future in Limbo

The future is once again murky for former Toronto Blue Jays' top prospect Jordan Groshans, who was just designated for assignment by the New York Yankees.

Per the Yankees on social media:

Earlier today, the Yankees claimed INF Jahmai Jones off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated INF Jordan Groshans for assignment.

It's the second time he's been DFA'd this offseason, having also been let go by the Miami Marlins. The Yankees will now have a week to trade him, release him or send him to the minors.

He was in the Top 100 prospects (per MLB.com) in three straight years from 2020-2022, getting as high as No. 46 in 2021. Groshans is still just 24 years old, so there's certainly a chance of him finding himself as he moves forward, but it just hasn't happened yet. He's hit .262 in 61 career major league at-bats and hit just .244 at Triple-A last season, with only six home runs.

Given the age and the former prospect pedigree, you'd have to imagine he will get a shot somewhere, whether with the Yankees in the minors or in another organization.

Here's what his MLB.com prospect profile previously said:

Combining plus bat speed with a balanced swing and a knack for barreling the baseball, Groshans has the potential to hit for average and power from the right side of the plate. He consistently hits hard line drives with backspin carry to all fields, has no problem turning around quality velocity and employs an approach that's advanced for his age. Scouts believe Groshans will develop plus power as he grows into his projectable 6-foot-3 frame and adds some loft to his swing, and he already shows an innate feel for driving the ball the other way with authority.
