As the Miami Marlins search for additional offense in 2024, they've signed former Baltimore Orioles' slugger Trey Mancini to a contract that gives him an invitation to spring training.

The deal was reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post:

Trey Mancini agrees to minors deal with Marlins. Invite to MLB spring training.

Obviously the nature of the deal doesn't mean that Mancini will be a part of the Marlins this upcoming season, but it's a low-cost flier for Miami. The Marlins won 84 games last season and advanced to the National League playoffs, but they were starved for offense all season, prompting them to add Josh Bell at the trade deadline. While he returns in 2024, the team is primed to lose Jorge Soler in free agency, which is a huge loss.

Still just 31 years old, Mancini has spent seven years in the big leagues with the Orioles and Cubs. He has been at the big league level for eight years but missed all of the 2020 season while battling colon cancer.

As the Orioles were going through the worst of their rebuild, Mancini was the brightest light for years. He hit 35 homers back in 2019 and also hit more than 20 homers in three other seasons. He was traded to the Houston Astros in 2022 and helped the Astros win the World Series before spending part of 2023 with the Chicago Cubs before being let go.

He hit just .234 in Chicago with four home runs in 79 games.
