One day after making history on the mound, the Miami Marlins have optioned burgeoning young ace Eury Perez to Triple-A.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Perez was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.

ANALYSIS
Perez will head to Jacksonville ahead of the All-Star break and could remain in the minors for the time being. His performance on the mound this year has been stellar, posting a 2.36 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 61 strikeouts over 53.1 innings in 11 starts with Miami, but the team appears to be taking a cautious approach with the the 20-year-old's workload. The team has yet to announce who will replace Perez in their starting rotation, though Edward Cabrera (shoulder) is set to return shortly after the break.

There had been talk about the Marlins trying to control his innings, but this post makes it sound like he could remain in the minors for longer than just the All-Star break.

The Marlins are in a tough position here. Perez is just 20-years-old and has already thrown 84 innings between the majors and minors this year. He's never thrown even that many in a season before at the pro level, topping out at 78.0 innings in 2021. He's certainly a huge part of their future, so they have to be careful with him, but the team doesn't want to forfeit the now, either.

Miami enters play on Friday at 51-38 and in the drivers seat for the first wild card spot in the National League. How they handle Perez and his workload will be fascinating to watch as they chase their first playoff berth since 2020.

In addition to Cabrera, the team also has Johnny Cueto rehabbing at Triple-A, so he is an option, but the results of his rehab haven't been very good.

The Marlins will take on the Phillies on Friday at 6:40 p.m. ET.
