Minnesota Twins Sign Formerly Successful Reliever as They Look to Aid Bullpen

The Minnesota Twins have signed Matt Bowman to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. Prior to injuries, he was a successful reliever for the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals.

As money issues continue to slow down the Minnesota Twins' offseason wishes, they are being forced to get creative in how they acquire players.

That continued on Thursday as Minnesota inked reliever Matt Bowman to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.

Per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com:

RHP Matt Bowman, who spent the past three seasons in the Yankees organization and made three appearances for New York last season, signed a Minor League deal with the Twins with an invite to Spring Training, per source. He’ll earn $925,000 if he reaches the Majors.

The Twins have one of the best relievers in baseball in Jhoan Duran and also feature Griffin Jax, but there is ample opportunity at the back end of the 'pen for innings to be had.

The 32-year-old has appeared in the majors in five different years with the Yankees, Cardinals and Reds. He was most prominent for St. Louis, where he went 2016-2018, pitching in 156 games in that time. He also pitched in a career-best 75 games during the 2017 season.

Unfortunately, injuries have taken their toll on Bowman. He missed all of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and then he missed two full seasons because of Tommy John surgery.

He resurfaced with the Yankees system in 2023 but spent most of the year in the minors.

Lifetime, he's 7-13 with a 4.13 ERA.

As for the Twins, they won the American League Central a season ago and advanced to the playoffs, beating the Toronto Blue Jays in the wild card round.
