Pittsburgh Pirates Set to Call Up Another Top Prospect on Monday

The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to call up versatile top prospect Endy Rodriguez on Monday, per reports.

As the Pittsburgh Pirates have fallen out of the playoff race, it's time to see what the kids can do.

Sitting at 41-52 and 10.5 games back in the National League Central, the Pirates are set to call up another top prospect: Versatile 23-year-old Endy Rodriguez.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Rodriguez will be called up by the Pirates on Monday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

ANALYSIS
Rodriguez had a brief stint at Triple-A Indianapolis last year and has spent the start of the 2023 campaign with the Triple-A club. Over 67 games this year, he's slashed .268/.356/.419 with six homers, 54 runs, 38 RBI and four stolen bases. The 23-year-old has had four multi-hit performances over his past five appearances and will now be rewarded with his first big-league call-up. Henry Davis has seen plenty of time in right field since being called up, so Rodriguez should have ample opportunities to carve out playing time behind the dish.

That's important to note because Rodriguez has been listed as a catcher, outfielder and second baseman by MLB.com.

He's currently the Pirates No. 3 overall prospect and the No. 35 overall prospect in baseball.

Here's a portion of his MLB.com prospect profile:

A switch-hitter, Rodriguez is now looking like he has the chance to be a true impact bat in the middle of a big league lineup. Even as he’s moved up the ladder, he’s continued to show a very good approach at the plate, drawing walks (11.4 percent BB rate in his two full seasons in the Pirates' organization) and limiting the swings-and-misses (18.4 K rate in 2021-22 combined). The power continues to come, and after hitting 25 homers and slugging .590 in 2022, it’s looking like he should have at least above-average pop in the big leagues.

The Pirates will play host to the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night.

First pitch is 7:05 p.m. ET.
