Popular Former Member of the Seattle Mariners Signs Minor League Deal with New York Yankees

The New York Yankees have signed popular former Seattle Mariners' catcher Luis Torrens to a minor league deal.

The New York Yankees have come to contract terms with former Seattle Mariners' catcher Luis Torrens.

The information came from MLBTradeRumors:

The Yankees have agreed to a minor league contract with catcher Luis Torrens, per the team’s transaction log at MLB.com. Presumably, he’ll be in camp as a non-roster invitee this spring.

Torrens was a very popular member of the Mariners who rejected an outright assignment this offseason, becoming a free agent instead.

He was part of the roster that helped break the M's playoff drought in 2022 and even was the team's winning pitcher in a late-season game in 2022 against the Detroit Tigers. He also got a game-winning hit in 2022 in an epic 1-0 win over the Yankees. There was a just fun-factor when Torrens was involved in Seattle.

In addition to the Mariners, he's appeared in big league games for the Padres and Cubs. He made his major league debut with San Diego back in 2017. His best season was for the 2021 Mariners, when he hit 15 homers and drove in 47. Not known as a great catcher defensively, he does have a reputation for hitting left-handed pitching. He's a .244 career hitter against southpaws with 13 of his 19 career homers coming against them.

If Torrens doesn't make the roster for the Yankees, he could stick in the organization as a depth piece. If he isn't able or doesn't want to do that, don't be surprised if the M's and Torrens re-connect as their seems to be a mutual affinity there.
