The San Francisco Giants have been trying to sign a marquee free agent for a handful of years now, tracing back to when the club pursued outfielder Bryce Harper upon the conclusion of the 2018 Major League Baseball season, but have had no luck.

This past winter, the Giants engaged in talks with star free agents Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa. Judge passed on the Giants to return to the New York Yankees on a nine-year, $360 million contract. Correa agreed to terms on a 13-year, $350 million deal with the Giants, but after medical concerns arose from Correa's physical, the two parties were unable to reach an agreement, and Correa instead signed a multi-year deal to return to the Minnesota Twins.

The Giants will likely try again next winter to sign a star player to their roster. The club is coming off an 81-81 season, one year removed from winning 107 games in 2021. Prior to 2021, the Giants had not posted a winning season since 2016.

The two best free agents that will are expected to hit the open market are 2021 American League MVP Shohei Ohtani and third baseman Manny Machado. Ohtani has yet to agree to a long-term extension with the Los Angeles Angels, but could receive a $500 million contract either in the form of an extension, or from another club on the open market. Machado recently shared his intentions to opt out of his contract with the San Diego Padres, upon the conclusion of the season.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Machado is seeking a ten-year, $400 million contract.

"If the Padres don’t pay it, well, don’t think for a second that someone like the New York Mets or Yankees or San Francisco Giants or the Chicago Cubs will hesitate," Nightengale wrote in his Sunday article.

It will certainly be interesting to see how things play out over the next 12 months.
