Arizona Diamondbacks Tag 7 Runs Off St. Louis Cardinals' Jordan Montgomery

In this story:
Jordan Montgomery entered Tuesday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks as one of the bright spots in the St. Louis Cardinals' pitching staff. He exited the game after four innings, as the Diamondbacks hung seven runs on him off ten hits and a homer.
Montgomery had a 2.45 ERA over his first three starts of the 2023 season. His ERA was up to 4.84 when the Diamondbacks were finished with him.
The Diamondbacks scored their first run in the top of the third, thanks to a Josh Rojas RBI single, then in the fourth, Arizona's offense erupted for six runs.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Christian Walker, Evan Longoria and Nick Ahmed all collected hits, before Gabriel Moreno emptied the bases with a three-run blast. Cardinals manager Oli Marmol would keep Montgomery in to pitch the remainder of the inning, but upon the conclusion of the fourth, Montgomery's day was done.
It was the worst showing Montgomery has had since joining the Cardinals last summer, when the club acquired him in a trade for center fielder Harrison Bader from the New York Yankees, minutes before the MLB trade deadline.
Montgomery logged a 6-3 record and 3.11 ERA over 63.2 innings pitched and 11 starts with St. Louis last season.
The Diamondbacks' offensive outpouring occurred just one night after Arizona tallied five runs in the top of the seventh inning Monday night off Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty and relief pitcher Andre Palliante.
The Diamondbacks would go on to defeat the Cardinals 6-3, clinching another series victory Tuesday night. The two clubs will wrap up the three-game series Wednesday afternoon at Busch Stadium.
Despite entering the season as heavy favorites to repeat as division champions, the Cardinals are in a funk to open the season, and now drop to 7-11, dead last in the National League Central.
The Diamondbacks improve to 11-7 and remain atop the National League West.
