Boston Red Sox' Starting Pitchers Continue Historic Pace Despite Loss on Wednesday

The Boston Red Sox lost to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night, but don't blame starting pitcher Kutter Crawford, who put another great performance for the team's historic starting rotation.

The Boston Red Sox' bullpen faltered on Wednesday night as the team lost to the Baltimore Orioles, 7-5, at Fenway Park. The loss dropped Boston to 7-5 on the year and wasted another great performance from the team's starting rotation.

Kutter Crawford threw five scoreless innings in the no-decision, allowing just two hits while striking out five. His 0.57 ERA is part of a collective group that's dominated historically in the early-going this season.

Per @OptaSTATS on social media:

The starting pitchers for the @RedSox have allowed 10 earned runs through 12 games this season.

It’s the fewest earned runs allowed through 12 games of a season by any team’s starting pitchers since ERA was first tracked in 1913.

Despite the great numbers to this point, there is concern for the rotation moving forward. While the new pitching group of Craig Breslow and Andrew Bailey undoubtedly can help the Sox continue to perform, the long-term injury to Lucas Giolito, and the new IL stint for Nick Pivetta, are certainly testing the team's depth and resolve.

The 28-year-old Crawford is in his fourth season in the big leagues, all with the Red Sox. He's 9-15 lifetime with a 4.45 ERA. He has allowed just one earned run in three games this season.

The Red Sox will take on the Orioles again on Thursday night as they look to avoid the sweep. First pitch from Fenway is set for 7:10 p.m. ET as Grayson Rodriguez (2-0, 2.19 ERA) pitches against Garrett Whitlock (1-0, 0.96 ERA).
