There had been some question about Pivetta's spot in the rotation for a few reasons:
1) He's struggled this year. He allowed seven earned runs in five innings on Tuesday and took the loss against the Atlanta Braves and now owns a 2-3 record with a 6.23 ERA this season. He also has a 1.47 WHIP.
2) James Paxton is coming back to the starting rotation on Friday. The team announced that the lefty would make his season debut against the Cardinals. With him coming back to the rotation, the team needs to make a decision on a starter going elsewhere. There was thought it could be Pivetta moving to the bullpen, but now, it looks as if it will be Brayan Bello moving back to Triple-A.
Pivetta was acquired in the COVID 2020 season in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies. He was an integral part of the Red Sox 2021 run to the American League Championship series and excelled in the bullpen during that playoff run.
For his career, he's 42-53 with a 5.07 ERA. He won 10 games last season for the Sox and posted a 4.56 ERA.
The Red Sox are currently 21-16 on the season and in fourth place in the American League East.
They will play the Braves on Wednesday at 7:20 p.m. ET.
