Boston Red Sox' Now Being Seriously Linked to Free Agent Pitcher, Would Be Massive Upgrade to Offseason

The Boston Red Sox, in massive need of starting pitcher upgrades, are being heavily linked now to free agent Jordan Montgomery.

Over the weekend we heard that the Boston Red Sox were still interested in free agent pitcher Jordan Montgomery, but that they were waiting for his price to drop.

Now, multiple reports are out that indicate the two sides may in fact be moving towards a deal.

Per Peter Gammons, longtime MLB Insider, on social media:

One NL executive yesterday said "we hear the Red Sox and Scott Boras had a good meeting recently and may get some deal eventually done on Jordan Montgomery."

And then this one, from ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney:

The Red Sox had a zoom meeting with Jordan Montgomery recently. He’d represent an upgrade for their ‘24 rotation, and if signed to a long-term deal, could be part of the staff rotation. They certainly have the payroll flexibility to make it happen

Signing Montgomery wouldn't completely end the Red Sox offseason from Hell, but it would do a lot to put a dent in it. From the outset, this offseason has been marred by a lack of spending and a narrative that ownership no longer cares about winning. The team hasn't done much to add to the roster, despite glaring needs at several positions, and keeps talking about the future only.

Signing Montgomery would represent a significant upgrade to the roster both now and in the future. The Red Sox rotation is full of significant question marks with regards to Lucas Giolito's ability to bounce back, Brayan Bello's ability to take the next step and Tanner Houck/Garrett Whitlock/Kutter Crawford's ability to stay healthy and effective over a full 162.

Montgomery was an integral part of the Rangers winning their first World Series title in 2023, going 4-2 in the regular season in 11 starts with a 2.79 ERA. He was traded to Texas at the trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals.

All in all, he's pitched seven years in the big leagues with the New York Yankees, Cardinals and Rangers. He's 38-34 with a 3.68 lifetime ERA.

After seeing Cody Bellinger drop his price for the Chicago Cubs to three years and $80 million, perhaps the Red Sox will get the deal they covet with Montgomery.
