According to Boston Red Sox Insider Rob Bradford of WEEI, the Red Sox remain interested in free agent starter Jordan Montgomery, but they are waiting for his price to come down.

Per Bradford on social media:

Feeling per sources is Red Sox prioritizing Jordan Montgomery over other potential free agent pitching additions, but still waiting for price to come down

First off, it makes perfect sense that the Red Sox are interested in/prioritizing Montgomery. The team is desperate for impact starting pitchers. Boston finished last in the American League East each of the last two years and has nothing but question marks in their rotation as of now.

The team traded away Chris Sale this offseason and signed bounceback candidate Lucas Giolito. Furthermore, 24-year-old Brayan Bello has questions about what kind of jump he'll take, while Nick Pivetta has always been inconsistent. Finally, the trio of Garrett Whitlock, Kutter Crawford and Tanner Houck also has major questions.

Bringing in Montgomery would give the team another established arm and give them someone to put at the top of their rotation. It's really just a game of chicken at this point. How eager is Montgomery to sign and drop his price given that spring training has already started?

Montgomery was an integral part of the Rangers winning their first World Series title in 2023, going 4-2 in the regular season in 11 starts with a 2.79 ERA. He was traded to Texas at the trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals.

All in all, he's pitched seven years in the big leagues with the New York Yankees, Cardinals and Rangers. He's 38-34 with a 3.68 lifetime ERA.
