Boston Red Sox' starting pitcher Brayan Bello is setting the bar high for the 2024 season, saying that he wants to be the team's Opening Day starter.

Per Boston.com:

“After this weekend, I’m going to Florida to compete for that spot … that’s my mentality, to compete at the top level of the rotation,” Bello said. “I think that’s a goal pretty much every starter has, to throw on opening day. That’s one of the goals that I have for my career.”

The 24-year-old Bello certainly has a chance to earn the Opening Day nod, considering the state of the Red Sox starting rotation. After trading Chris Sale this offseason to the Atlanta Braves, the team is left with Lucas Giolito, Nick Pivetta and Kutter Crawford as assured rotation options.

While Giolito is the most accomplished starter of the group, Bello could get the nod considering he's been in the Sox system and is more known to fans.

He's coming off a season in which he went 12-11 with a 4.24 ERA for the Sox, who finished last in the American League East for the third time in four years.

He made his major league debut in 2022 and is the most exciting, homegrown pitching prospect for the organization since Jon Lester and Clay Bucholz.

In addition to his lofty goals, Bello is reportedly making some changes this year.

Per Ian Browne of MLB.com:

Brayan Bello ready to make the slider a significant part of his mix in 2024, he said today at Winter Weekend.

Bello features a good sinker and an excellent changeup, but adding a third pitch will be a significant development for him as he looks to grow as a pitcher.
