BREAKING: Oakland Athletics Closing In on Stadium Deal in Las Vegas?

The Nevada Independent reports that the Oakland Athletics and Red Rocks Resort are about to reach an agreement on a $1 billion stadium in Las Vegas. After years of trying to figure out a solution in Oakland, the team could be on the move in the near future. There are still logistical hurdles to overcome in Nevada, but there are pieces in place to make a move seem more possible than ever.

There was so much optimism earlier in the day for the Oakland Athletics.

Now? Only potential heartbreak.

Early in the day, top pitching prospect Mason Miller made his debut against the Cubs, striking out five and hitting 100+ mph on 15 different fastballs.

Now, the A's are reportedly closing in on an agreement with Red Rocks Resort to build a $1 billion stadium in Las Vegas. The stadium deal also has government support in Nevada. These reports come via the Nevada Independent.

The story indicates that there are still logistical hurdles to overcome in Nevada. It's too early to know if those hurdles are real barriers to moving the team or if they are just formalities.

More from the story:

"According to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the A’s will cover the costs for the 30,000-to-35,000-seat retractable-roof stadium to house the Major League Baseball franchise on a nearly 100-acre site near Tropicana Boulevard and Interstate 15. The As would have to purchase the land from Red Rock Resorts.

The plan would be to pass a bill through the Legislature to create a funding mechanism, including a special taxation district covering the stadium site, which would allow for sales tax proceeds to be reinvested in the area, along with an allocation of transferable tax credits estimated to be worth around $500 million. Clark County would also have to sign off on a new taxing district."

We will continue to monitor this story as more information becomes available. The story in the Nevada Independent was written by Howard Stutz and Tabitha Mueller.
