Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Marcus Stroman reached an important milestone in his career Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field, when he struck out Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman in the top of the third inning, for the inning's second out.

Stroman's punch out was the 1,000th he had recorded of his nine-year Major League career. Stroman struck Freeman out swinging on a full-count.

Stroman has been excellent through his first four starts of the 2023 season. He entered play Sunday with a 0.75 ERA. He also was the Cubs' starting pitcher on Opening Day last month. He has yet to pick up a loss this season.

Stroman signed a three-year, $71 million contract with the Cubs, upon the conclusion of the 2021 Major League season. Stroman's deal includes a player option after year two, meaning that he can opt out and test free agency again if he wants to this winter. Stroman seems to really like pitching at Wrigley Field. Perhaps he is next in line for a contract extension, after the Cubs' front office locked up Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner to extensions over the past month.

Stroman pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays from 2014 to 2019. Midway through the 2019 season, he was dealt to the New York Mets for pitching prospects Simeon Woods Richardson and Anthony Kay.
