Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner extended his on-base streak to 26 games when he singled to center field in the fifth inning of Monday's game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.

Hoerner's streak is the longest on-base streak since 2019, when Kris Bryant reached base safely in 26 straight games between April 17 and May 17.

Hoerner has excelled as the Cubs' lead-off man this season. Through 28 games, the second baseman has .328 Batting Average and .366 On Base Percentage. Hoerner also has an .800 OPS to go with two home runs and 17 RBI.

Hoerner broke out in 2022, in his first full season at the shortstop position. Despite having Hoerner and former top prospect Nick Madrigal, the Cubs signed Dansby Swanson to a seven-year, $177 million contract over the winter. The Swanson signing signaled that Hoerner would be moving back to second base, a position he played in 2020 and 2021 while the club still had Javier Baez manning the shortstop position.

Hoerner has quickly embraced his new role with his team. Just days before Opening Day, the infielder signed a three-year, $35 million contract extension to remain in Chicago.

The Cubs were swept by the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park in Miami over the weekend, dropping their record to 14-13 this season. This week, the team will look for redemption as it plays four games in Washington D.C. before returning home to play the Marlins Friday at Wrigley Field.
