Cincinnati Reds' Longtime Leader Details Why He Wants to Continue Playing

Speaking on the "Flippin' Bats" podcast with Ben Verlander, Cincinnati Reds' legend Joey Votto detailed the recent arm injuries that he's battled through and why he wants to continue playing.

It's well-documented at this point that Cincinnati Reds' legend and current free agent Joey Votto wants to continue playing baseball in 2024. What's been less clear is the true motivation behind his desire to keep playing.

Is Votto looking to further his Hall of Fame resume? Win a World Series? Something else?

He made the answer more clear on an edition of the Flippin' Bats podcast with Ben Verlander on Thursday, saying that he wants to play when he's fully healthy so he can fully get an answer on what he has left in the tank.

It sounds as if Votto was so compromised recently by arm injuries that he can't tell if he's truly got nothing left, or if he was just injured. He made it clear he wants that answer, and if he is truly done, he'll walk away graciously.

Joey Votto talked with @BenVerlander about his injury last season and broke down how it affected his play and outlook for the rest of his career.

A lifetime .294 hitter, Votto is one of the more accomplished players of the last 20 years. He's got a .409 on-base percentage lifetime and has hit 356 career home runs. The slugger also owns a pristine resume with six All-Star appearances, a Gold Glove and an MVP award.

He's led the league in on-base percentage in seven separate seasons. He spent 17 years with the Reds and had his team option declined heading into this offseason.

He hit .202 last season as he battled those arm injuries. Unfortunately, this led him to accumulate just 208 at-bats.
