Detroit Tigers Release Financial Information on New Bullpen Signing

After a good season for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023, reliever Shelby Miller is signing a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers.

UPDATE: 6:25 p.m. ET: It's a one-year deal worth more than $3 million. There's a team option for 2025.

The Tigers have announced the signing. It’s a one-year contract worth a guaranteed $3MM, the team announced. They also hold a club option worth $4.25MM and a $250K buyout.

After a good season for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023, right-handed reliever Shelby Miller is signing a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers.

Per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press:

The 33-year-old helped the Dodgers win the National League West again this past season, going 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 36 games.

Miller was a former top starter in the National League who won 15 games for the St. Louis Cardinals back in 2013. He won 10 games in 2014 and then really battled poor performance and injury. After St. Louis, he went to Atlanta and went 6-17. He then went 3-12 for Arizona in 2016. He made just four appearances in 2017, five appearances in 2018 and 19 appearances in 2019. He opted out of the COVID 2020 season and then made just 17 appearances total between 2021 and 2022.

Lifetime, he's 41-58 with a 4.08 ERA.

His signing continues an offseason of acquisitions for the Tigers, who are looking to make up ground again in the American League Central. The team added Mark Canha in a trade and then signed starting pitchers Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty. They also brought back reliever Andrew Chafin.

Detroit finished second in the division in 2023 and clearly sees the division as attainable given the rebuilding efforts of the Royals and White Sox, and the spending limitations of the Guardians and Twins.
