After toiling away in the minor leagues for the last five years, infielder Taylor Motter was rewarded with a Major League contract Wednesday, at the spry age of 33.

Three days earlier, the St. Louis Cardinals designated Motter for assignment. Wednesday, the club signed him to a Major League contract. In a corresponding roster move, St. Louis optioned top prospect Jordan Walker to Triple-A.

From 2018 through 2022, played a total of 34 games at the Major League level, playing for the Seattle Mariners, Minnesota Twins, Colorado Rockies, Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds. A year earlier, he saw a career-high 92 games with the Mariners. Motter played 33 games in his rookie season with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays selected Motter in the 17th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft out of Coastal Carolina University.

For the past 12 years, Motter has spent the majority of his time in the minor leagues. The journeyman signed a minor league deal with the St. Louis Cardinals last winter and after a strong showing at spring training, Motter earned a spot on the Cardinals' Opening Day roster. Now, he'll see an opportunity to be a contributor at the Major League level at age 33.

Motter's story is a testament to his hard work and determination. The Florida native never gave up, and now he finds himself back at the Major League level.

In seven games this season, Motter has slashed .222/.300/.633 with one RBI and zero home runs.
