Milwaukee Brewers Reportedly Interested in Slugging First Baseman

In addition to veteran first baseman Carlos Santana, the Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly also interested in veteran Garrett Cooper.

In addition to veteran first baseman Carlos Santana, the Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly interested in veteran Garrett Cooper.

Per Robert Murray of Fansided:

As FanSided reported last week, the Brewers have had conversations with free-agent first baseman Carlos Santana. Another option the team has also considered is free agent Garrett Cooper, sources say.

Signing Cooper would accomplish most of the same things as signing Santana, the key differences being that Cooper is younger, and Santana is a switch-hitter.

The 33-year-old Cooper is a seven-year veteran who has played for the New York Yankees, Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.

He actually made the All-Star Game in 2022 as a member of the Marlins and represents a good power option for Milwaukee. Lifetime, he's a .268 hitter with 56 homers. He hit a career-high 17 homers in 2023 between Miami and San Diego. He hit .251 for the season.

If he were to sign in Milwaukee, he'd be an option at first base or at designated hitter. At this point, they don't have a clear-cut option at either position, with veterans Jake Bauers and Owen Miller appearing as first base options.

The Brewers enter 2024 in an interesting position. Though they won the National League Central a season ago, they are a team at a crossroads. They have a new manager in Pat Murphy, who took over for Craig Counsell, and their trademark pitching has wilted because of the loss of Brandon Woodruff.

They have great young talent like Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio who are expected to be major players this year, but you just never know how prospects will pan out.

Spring training begins in less than one month.
