Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen exited Sunday's spring training game against the Minnesota Twins, after the veteran was hit by a pitch on his left hand. The Pirates would go on to defeat the Twins 5-2 in Bradenton, Florida.

After five seasons away from Pittsburgh, McCutchen returned to the Pirates on a one-year, $5 million contract in January.

McCutchen excelled in Pittsburgh as one of the top players in the National League, from 2009 through 2017. McCutchen finished top-3 in National League MVP voting three straight times from 2012 through 2014, winning the award in 2013. In 2015, McCutchen placed fifth in NL MVP voting.

McCutchen was named a Gold Glover in 2012. He received Silver Slugger honors from 2012 through 2015. McCutchen was a National League All-Star five consecutive years from 2011 through 2015.

Before the start of the 2018 season, the Pirates traded McCutchen to the San Francisco Giants for a package that included Bryan Reynolds, who has since blossomed into a star. Reynolds requested the club to trade him last winter, but the Pirates have not moved him. McCutchen played half of the 2018 season for the Giants, before he was moved to the New York Yankees in a trade prior to the trade deadline. That winter, McCutchen entered free agency, where he signed a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Last season, he played for the Milwaukee Brewers, slashing .237/.316/.700 and compiling 17 home runs and 69 RBI.

McCutchen, 36, returned home to Pittsburgh in January. He will have an opportunity to mentor young players, on what is expected to be a rebuilding team.

No updates on McCutchen's injury or status moving forward have been provided since his departure from Sunday's game.
