San Diego Padres Now Considering Former Chicago Cubs Manager For Same Role with Team

With the stunning news of David Ross's firing with the Chicago Cubs on Monday, the San Diego Padres are reportedly interested in talking to Ross about their managerial opening.

Monday was a wild day on the managerial circuit.

The Cleveland Guardians hired Stephen Vogt as their next manager, and longtime Milwaukee Brewers' skipper Craig Counsell jumped ship to join the division-rival Chicago Cubs.

With Counsell going to the Cubs, manager David Ross is now shockingly out of the job. But he may not be for long as the San Diego Padres are reportedly interested in adding him to their list of candidates for the same position.

The following comes from an MLBTradeRumors, which cites a report from the San Diego-Union Tribune (subscription required):

Per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres are “considering adding Ross to their candidate pool” for the position left vacant by Bob Melvin, who recently traveled north for a job with the Giants.

Before the game of managerial musical chairs began on Monday, the Padres and president of baseball operations A.J. Preller had reportedly narrowed down their search to four finalists: senior advisor to player development and major leagues Mike Shildt, bench coach and offensive coordinator Ryan Flaherty, Angels infield coach Benji Gil, and Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza. According to Acee, the team wasn’t planning to interview any further candidates; their next manager would be one of Shildt, Flaherty, Gil, or Mendoza.

Mendoza is now out after taking the New York Mets job, so maybe Ross can become the fourth candidate there.

Ross had served as the Cubs' skipper for four seasons. He went 262-284 and had one postseason appearance (2020).

The 46-year-old spent 15 years in the big leagues as a player. He won the World Series in 2013 with the Red Sox and 2016 with the Cubs.
