Congratulations are in order for Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo, who recorded his 1,000th career strikeout on Monday night against the Oakland Athletics.

With the accomplishment, Castillo is now the 47th active pitcher to hit the 1,000 strikeout plateau. New York Mets pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander are at the top of the list with 3,224 and 3,218 strikeouts respectively. Zack Greinke, Clayton Kershaw and Cole Hamels round out the top five.

The next pitcher to hit the 1,000 mark is likely Angels reliever Matt Moore, who entered Monday at 973. Drew Smyly of the Cubs, at 968, could also reach it next.

Castillo was acquired by the Mariners at the 2022 trade deadline and has become the ace of the Mariners staff. As of this posting, he's thrown six shutout innings for the Mariners, who lead the Athletics, 6-0.

If the Mariners can hold onto the victory, Castillo would move to 3-2. He has a 2.98 ERA for the season and has struck out 66 in 57.1 innings.

For his career, he's 50-57 with a 3.55 ERA. He spent the first 5.5 years of his career with the Cincinnati Reds. He signed a five year contract with the Mariners after being acquired.

As for this game, in addition to Castillo's pitching, the Mariners have gotten home runs from both Jarred Kelenic and Jose Caballero. It's the second consecutive game that both players have homered.

Kelenic also has an RBI single.

The two teams will play on Tuesday at 9:40 p.m. ET.
